My iPhone Golf Apps

Apr 19

I’ve been wanting to do this for some time now. I’m always looking for an app that I can’t live without. More often than not I find out that I could live without it after all. There are however some really good iPhone apps that I use for golf. Here’s a screenshot of my phone golf app page:

My iPhone Golf Apps

I’ll go left to right starting at the top.

The first one is my ClubSG app from SkyCaddie called SG Mobile. I use to input all my on the course stats while playing. The app is great. It’s easy to navigate, it NEVER crashes and I’ve never ran into any issues with course information. The only that has happened is the last few holes didn’t take after I finished a round, but that easily fixable on the PC version. I highly recommend this app if you use ClubSG.

The second one is SwingPlane and I use it for recording my swing when I’m practicing in the garage. I’ve used it a couple of times on the course (most recently at Boca Greens, you can see the video on the YouTube page) but I like it for practice sessions the best. It very user-friendly and I like the fact that you can record any length of video. You’re not limited to 10 or 15 seconds. The playback is great and the drawing tools are the best that I have used (I’ve tried about 4 different swing apps) so far. The only thing I dislike about it is the playback buttons are very sensitive. When using the frame by frame feature you can easily hit the fast forward button and jump ahead in the video. It’s annoying but still better than the others I have used.

The third one is FreeCaddie. I downloaded this app after I played Las Vegas National back in March. Dan had downloaded right before we started and I was stunned at how accurate the distance readings were. Add in that it’s free and you have one hell of an app! I used it A LOT in Florida and I was really happy with it. Course downloads are a breeze and the user interface in easy as pie! This is another that I highly recommend.

Fourth up is OptimalClub. I have mixed reviews about this app so I’m going to try to be PC about it because I haven’t really used the app to its full potential yet. With the app you can create a “bag” and add all of your clubs you use to that bag.  You can then add in the distances you hit those clubs. With the app in map mode you select your target and the app tells you the distance and then gives you recommendations based on your distances you inputed in the app. With the GPS enabled it adds into the equation weather like wind and elevation. Really cool. Why I have mixed reviews then, well the app takes a while to get used to and I haven’t had enough time to use it on the course. I made one attempt at it in Florida and it took way to long for the maps and information to load, so I gave up. I have used it on the range and love it, so until i can figure out how to make it faster on the course that’s all I plan on using it for.

Next up is GolfProToGo. This is a neat app for helping you learn the proper way to approach a perticular shot. You can input a ton if information to get the results. An example would be (1) Approach (2) lie (3) ball relative to feet (4) terrain slope (5) wind. Then the results tell you how to play the shot. I don’t think I would ever use this on the course during a round, it is time-consuming, but I have used it at the range and it a nice resource to have at your fingertips!

Up next we have Golf Genie. This is the app that I won from the wonderful folks over at Golfstinks. I’ve played with this a but, but not enough to give it a fair review. The is a lot of information in this app and it had some very useful information. I’ve mainly used it home during my garage sessions and so far I like what it has to offer.

Next I have GOLF REC. This app allows you to input swing by swing your practice session. You can keep track of how many balls you hit. You can rate each shot. You can change clubs so you keep the stats for each club. you can input the results of each swing if it was a hook, slice or straight, judge the contact and then email yourself a results page. The results page is a bit scattered but if you know what you’re doing with excel you can make it work.

iSwing is next and I haven’t used this app since I got SwingPlane. There are some things I like about this one, but honestly I’m only keeping it around as a back up.

PGATOUR, and Rules of Golf are pretty self-explanatory, so I won’t go into detail about them. Chances are if you are reading this and have an iPhone you probably already have both of them if not, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!!

Last up is Metronome, by Ludwig. I tried out about 10 different metronome apps before sticking with this one. I put in my Golf page because the only reason I have it is to practice my tempo with. It’s a very user-friendly app and I recommend it if you’re looking for an app to help with Tempo.

So there you have it. All my apps that I use for golf. I’m always looking for new ones so if you have any that you think I might like let me know about. Or if you have any questions about the ones I’m using don’t hesitate to ask.

  1. How about a review of Mark Crossfields “Golf” app. Mark’s the most watchable pro on YouTube – his app was launched last week.

    • I’ll look into it, although I do have some reservations. Charging someone $2.99 for an App that has all the same content as whats on YouTube seems a bit odd.

  2. I have designed Pocket Golf Guide as a guide to help you improve your level of performance and enjoyment in the game of golf. It’s free for a limited time, check it out: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pocketgolfguide/id451938191?ls=1&mt=8

    • Thanks for the info.
I’m going to download it right now and check it out!

      • Pretty good App. A lot of very useful information. Thanks for the info!

      • Thank you very much! I hate to bug you again, but If it’s not too much to ask, review on app store is appreciated :)
Usually people post reviews only when they are not happy with an app, which is not fair.

        • Left a review for ya. It hasn’t shown up yet and I didn’t realize there is a waiting period before the reviews shows up, so if it shows up 10 times over I’m sorry. I’m a little bit impatient when it comes to stuff like that!

  3. Thank you very much!

Just found a really cool app called Golf Chex, it allows me to rate courses and view the ratings of other players. Its cool to see what other players are saying about the courses I know nothing about.

    Great Idea…

    • Thanks for the input! I have the GolfChex also. I’d like to see it catch on, the theory is a good one!
